On December 30, 2013, North Dakota was selected as one of six FAA test sites to conduct crucial research assisting the FAA in developing regulatory standards to foster integration of UAS into the national airspace. The Northern Plains UAS Test Site became the first site to begin flights in May 2014. As the largest site available for flying UAS anywhere in the United States, the Northern Plains UAS Test Site has attracted investment from leading aerospace companies including General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., Northrop Grumman, the U.S. Air Force and NASA.
As an FAA UAS Test Site location, North Dakota is therefore positioned at the forefront of the burgeoning UAS industry.
